Machu Picchu is an ancient Inca citadel located in the Peruvian Andes, some 2,430 metres above sea level. It was built in the 15th century and is considered one of the most important and famous archaeological sites in the world.

Machu Picchu is known for its impressive architecture, which includes terraces, stone walls and Inca-style buildings. In addition, the citadel is located in a place of great natural beauty, surrounded by mountains and forests.

For a long time, Machu Picchu was thought to be a fortified citadel, but today it is believed that it was actually a sacred place and a religious and political centre of the Incas. It is believed to have been built by the emperor Pachacutec, who would have used it as his private retreat.

Machu Picchu was discovered by the explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911, and has since been the subject of numerous archaeological studies. It has attracted millions of visitors from all over the world every year. In 1983, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2007 it was chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
