What is Marcahuamachuco?

Marcahuamachuco is an archaeological site located in the northern highlands of Peru, in the La Libertad region. It was an important regional centre of the Moche culture and later of the Wari culture, between approximately 400-1100 CE. The site includes a complex of monumental structures, including pyramids, plazas and temples, which were built using a combination of stone and adobe. The structures feature intricate carvings and reliefs depicting war scenes, ritual sacrifices and other aspects of Moche and Wari life. Marcahuamachuco was rediscovered in the early 20th century by Peruvian archaeologist Julio Tello, and has since been the subject of extensive archaeological research. The site is considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Peru and provides valuable information about the culture and history of the Moche and Wari civilisations.
