Visit the archaeological site of Kuélap

If you are looking for places in Peru do not hesitate, visit the archaeological site of Kuelap.

WHAT IS IT?

Imagen de Kuelap
It is a fortified citadel of Chachapoyas cultural affiliation, located in the district of Tingo, province of Luya, Amazonas region. It was built during the Late Intermediate period. The cornices may have served both as a decorative element and as protection against the rains. A group of enclosures, probably belonging to the Chacha elite, have friezes with lozenge-shaped figures. "El Tintero" is perhaps the most important and representative enclosure of the site; it is a kind of deposit or place of worship which, despite its size, has the appearance of an inkwell. The natural environment surrounding this site is overwhelming. Even as soon as you leave Chachapoyas, the Utcubamba river, the hanging tombs in certain places along the way, the variety of flora and fauna and the vertigo of the ascent to Kuelap itself, make a visit to this site an adventure and an unforgettable experience.

 WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

It represents the material testimony of the adaptation and mastery of such a rough and difficult geographical environment as the jungle, where the Chachapoyas culture settled. These constructions demonstrate the high degree of cultural development reached at that time. Thanks to the support of the government and a group of Peruvian professionals and researchers, a multidisciplinary research, conservation and development project for Kuelap has been set up and is currently in its fifth stage of implementation. The aim is to make it the second national archaeological icon after Machu Picchu. It currently has an Interpretation Centre and services for visitors.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

The site is exposed to heavy alluvial rainfall, which generates abundant vegetation growth in the midst of the archaeological structures.

Now that you know Kuélap, visit the archaeological site of Kuélap.
