The name of Sacred Valley Peru applies to the section of the Urubamba river valley that includes the towns of Pisac, Calca, Yucay, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo. Here, the river flows between cultivated canchones and slopes with steep andenerías (the area's cultivation terraces).
So called because it was the main supplier of food for the Inca empire, the Sacred Valley is located on the banks of the Urubamba River. This river was originally called Vilcanota, which comes from the Quechua word Wilcamayu or Sacred River.
