The Plaza Mayor

Lima's Plaza Mayor is one of the most emblematic sites of the city and of Peru in general. It is also known as the Plaza de Armas or Plaza Mayor, and is considered the heart of Lima's historic centre.
The Plaza Mayor was built in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, founder of Lima, and has been the scene of many of the most important events in Peruvian history, including the proclamation of Peru's independence in 1821.
The square is home to some of Lima's most important buildings, such as the Government Palace, the Lima Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. There are also several historical monuments and sculptures, as well as a central fountain.
